HOW THEY USE ULTRASOUND AND A VACUUM CLEANER TO DO CATARACT SURGERY WATCH A VIDEO OF HIGH TECH CATARACT EYE SURGERY

Ophthalmologists use a vacuum cleaner in cataract surgery. Or at least the ophthalmologist uses a vacuum device that sucks up the pieces of the old cataract. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye. By age 80, more than half of all people in the United States either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Cataract surgery usually involves only local anesthesia and is an outpatient procedure. The way cataract surgery is performed is a real miracle of high tech wizardry. The doctor inserts a probe into the front of the eye and the cataract is broken up using high frequency ultrasound. Then the pieces of the broken up cataract are sucked out with a vacuum. Then the ophthalmologist places a new folded lens into the area and the new lens unfolds. You don't even need a stitch!

Common symptoms of an eye cataract are:

Blurry vision, colors that seem faded, glare, not being able to see well at night.
Double vision and frequent prescription changes in your eye wear
