QUICK THINKING AND NURSING ACUMEN SAVE LIVES HIGH FLYING NURSING JOB SEE THE VIDEO OF A NURSE IN ACTION

Did they teach this in nursing school? Where minutes count the lessons of nursing school knowledge means survival. The nurse rides to trauma scenes as well in transport. The helicopter blades rotate ferociously as the nurse dashes out from beneath them. I've seen them on television but didn't realize the critical role of flight nursing. Doing much more than going along for the ride, they evaluate and stabilize trauma patients in those precious early minutes. With lives teetering on the edge, flight nurses make key decisions using every inch and ounce of their nursing acumen. This kind of nursing especially requires quick thinking and physical endurance.

"The standard flight crew on a medical transport helicopter or airplane typically includes a pilot, a paramedic and a nurse; additional crew can be added when necessary. A small percentage of air transport services employ doctors as part of their flight crews. The crews transport patients from one hospital to another as well as fly to scenes of accidents and disasters...In this role, flight nurses have greater autonomy than hospital nurses. Working under protocols, they decide which medications to give, how fast to give them and what other treatment to provide. The whole idea is to get treatment started as soon as possible".

""At 1,500 feet you can’t call the pharmacy for a consult or more supplies," said critical care nurse Christopher Manacci". Requirements vary from program-to-program, but most require RNs to have two to three years critical care experience, an advanced cardiac life support certificate (ACLS) and a pediatric advanced life support certificate, according to the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association. In 2005, Case Western Reserve Bolton Nursing School started a nursing program for flight nursing.

"Other requirements for flight nursing may include a neonatal resuscitation program, a nationally recognized trauma program such as prehospital trauma life support, basis trauma life support, trauma nurse core course or transport nurse advanced trauma course. Certifications such as critical care registered nurse (CCRN), certified emergency nurse (CEN) or certified flight registered nurse (CFRN) may also be required".
