OMEGA 3 BENEFITS OF OILY FISH AS SALMON TUNA AND SARDINES AND THE RECENT WARNING ON MERCURY IN TUNA SUSHI

Adding to a previous discussion about Omega 3 and the benefits of eating certain kinds of fatty fish such as tuna, salmon and sardines I noticed an interview about the benefits of eating fish and tuna. The interview was prompted amid concerns about reports of high mercury found in sushi tuna. Mercury in fish is definitely a concern since mercury can accumulate and cause neurological problems especially in children. From Inuit eating fish oil rich with Omega 3 to the American Heart Association recommendation on Omega 3 fish oil to the Institute of Medicine findings on seafood and fish oil and the heart,a litany of reports have implicated oily fish and omega 3 oils in health benefits for everything from the heart to the head. Omega 3 benefits, for the heart at least, seem to be accepted by mainstream medicine. For example, "fish and omega-3 fatty acids in fish are good for your heart. A Mayo Clinic specialist tells how the heart-health benefits of eating fish usually outweigh any risks".

"What is a tuna-lover to do ( in light of recent reports in the NY Times about high mercury content in some tuna?) TIME asked the opinion of Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, and co-author of one of the most comprehensive studies to date on the impact of fish consumption on human health".

"Should we stop eating tuna? No. Overall, the dangers of not eating fish [including tuna] outweigh the small possible dangers from mercury. The recommended amount for adults is to eat one or two servings of fish per week — but probably only 10% to 20% of the population in the U.S. eats sufficient fish. The real danger in this country, the real concern, is that we're not eating enough fish. That is very likely increasing our rates of death from heart disease".
