CHOLESTEROL LOWERING STATINS FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES NEW STUDY IMPLIES MOST DIABETICS BE CONSIDERED FOR STATIN DRUGS LIKE LIPITOR CRESTOR ZOCOR

Doctors have again suggested that people with diabetes would benefit from statin cholesterol drugs. Lowering cholesterol,LDL bad cholesterol, is a good idea in most people and especially good in people with diabetes. But just how good an idea? People with diabetes especially severe diabetes for a long time can have heart and cardiovascular problems as well as diabetes. Diabetics can have high triglycerides and high bad cholesterol LDL and low good cholesterol HDL. People with diabetes tend to have increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Several medical studies have suggested that people with diabetes may benefit from using the statin drugs, these are drugs with names like Lipitor and Crestor and Zocor . So doctors have been giving people with diabetes cholesterol lowering medicine such as these powerful statin drugs . The use of the statins has been associated with a delay in starting insulin treatment in patients with Type 2 diabetes initially treated with oral anti diabetic pills.

Doctors looked at many of these diabetes cholesterol statin studies and did a metaanalysis. This is a statistical technique to combine and use data from a number of other studies. They analyzed the results of 14 previous trials involving a total of 90,000 people, and found that over nearly five years the number of deaths among the nearly 19,000 diabetes patients fell by 9 per cent for every one-unit drop in their level of LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. The study's authors from the National Health and Medical Research Council's Clinical Trial Centre at the University of Sydney and the Epidemiological Studies Unit in Oxford said "most people with diabetes should now be considered for statin therapy", with the exception of children and pregnant women. The study was in The Jan 12,2008 Lancet.

Right now the most "popular" class of cholesterol medications are the statins. They are the most powerful drugs that reduce the bad cholesterol, LDL. The statin cholesterol lowering drugs include:

  • Lipitor (atorvastatin)
  • Crestor (rosuvastatin)
  • Mevacor (lovastatin)
  • pravastatin
  • Lescol (fluvastatin)
  • simvistatin

Statins are known to be beneficial in a wide range of people at increased risk of heart disease or stroke. Statins reduce the quantities of LDL Cholesterol. Statins block the manufacture of cholesterol in the liver by interfering with an enzyme that orchestrates cholesterol production,HMGCoa Reductase. That's why statins are called HMGCoa Reductase Inhibitors. Enzymes are chemicals called proteins that act all over the body to speed up chemical reactions. Statins work in the liver. That's why they get a blood test to check liver function when someones starts a statin and why they monitor liver function.A rare but dangerous possible side effect of statins is rhabdomyolysis characterized by muscle pain and weakness. One statin, cervistatin, was removed from the market because of problems with this phenomenon. It's the breakdown of muscle tissue and requires immediate emergency intervention. It may be the result of drug interactions between statins and other medications which result in high concentrations of the drug.
