HARVARD DOCTOR VIDEO TALKS ABOUT TREATING HIGH CHOLESTEROL IN CHILDREN AND THE CONTROVERSY ON ADVICE FOR KIDS WITH ELEVATED CHOLESTEROL
A Video Talks About Kids and Cholesterol Do you Know What Familial Hypercholesterolemia Is?
The topic of cholesterol in children is a hot button topic though not on the same level as the possible role of vaccines in autism. Nevertheless, the pediatric doctor group, American Academy of Pediatrics came out with new recommendations for treating children with cholesterol and it was like throwing a match onto a kerosene soaked rag. The flames of controversy erupted with one doctor saying he felt embarrassed for the Academy of Pediatrics. He was referring to the suggestion by the nation’s leading pediatric group "that certain high-risk children as young as 8 may also be put on statin therapy, the statins are the most powerful and widely used cholesterol lowering medicine just like Mom, Dad and Grandpa". In the video below a Harvard doctor clarifies the situation about kids and cholesterol.
"But the doctors who wrote the guidelines say they have been largely misunderstood. They say that far from leading to widespread use of statin drugs by children, the guidelines target the small percentage of children with genetic cholesterol problems or those with several worrisome risk factors, like obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes".
Have you ever heard of familial hypercholesterolemia? Imagine if you will, a person with high cholesterol. Very high cholesterol. Recommendations for the "bad" LDL cholesterol vary but generally 100 or less is satisfactory. Now imagine a person with an LDL of 500 or 1000. Finally, imagine they are just twelve years old! That's the situation that confronts people who have a genetic problem with cholesterol disposal called Familial Hypercholesterolemia. Their bodies don't have the full mechanism for dealing with cholesterol LDL and as a result they are at very increased risk of heart attacks. Maybe the Academy of Pediatrics had those children in mind when it suggested some kids could use high powered cholesterol drugs called statins.
Watch this video by a doctor at Harvard Medical School who discusses high cholesterol in children and what to do about it. He say exercise and diet are still the choice for most children.
