PART TWO OMEGA 3 BENEFITS FOR THE HEART AND MAYBE EYE AND BRAIN TOO
A study that appeared in the January, 2004 issue of the medical journal Neurology concluded that "Fatty fish and marine omega-3 PUFA consumption was associated with a reduced risk...of impaired cognitive function" in a middle-aged population. They looked at 1,613 subjects ranging from 45 to 70 years old. "From 1995 until 2000,....cognitive battery tests were administered and compound scores were constructed for memory, psychomotor speed, cognitive flexibility (i.e., higher order information processing), and overall cognition". They gave the participants a questionnaire to assess what they ate. The conclusion " Fatty fish and marine omega-3 PUFA consumption was associated with a reduced risk and intake of cholesterol and saturated fat with an increased risk of impaired cognitive function in this middle-aged population.
Previous Report About Alzheimer's
Scientists from Rush Medical Center, Chicago tried to track the fish consumption of 815 elderly people aged 65 to 94 years, who were initially unaffected by Alzheimer disease ,they completed a dietary questionnaire on average 2.3 years before clinical evaluation of incident disease. The scientists report that elderly people who ate the omega 3 containing fish regularly had less chance of contracting Alzheimer's.
