A VIDEO ABOUT HEART SURGEON DOCTOR MICHAEL DEBAKEY THOMAS EDISON WITH A SCALPEL

INVENTED THE MASH UNIT AND A VIDEO ABOUT THE SURGEON INVENTOR WHO PERFORMED 60000 SURGERIES

I am certain the Internet will be filled with tributes to heart surgeon and inventor Dr. Michael DeBakey. A real genius, he wasn't just a famous and prolific surgeon but a great inventor. DeBakey seemed to be a Thomas Edison with a scalpel."In a career spanning more than 70 years, he was an inventor of technology ranging from suture scissors to artificial heart pumps, including in 1932 while still a medical student a device called the roller pump that was a forerunner to the era of open heart surgery".

"And as a surgeon, he treated the rich and famous and the humble alike, performing more than 60,000 operations before he finally put down his scalpel in 1998 at age 90. Kenneth L. Mattox, chief of surgery at Baylor-affiliated Ben Taub Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, has no doubts that his mentor and long-time colleague did that many operations. As a resident training under DeBakey, Mattox tells the Health Blog, he remembers a day in the late 1960s — before the days of bypass surgery–when doctors at Methodist Hospital did 75 cardiovascular operations. DeBakey did about 30 of them himself".

"With his mentor at Tulane, Alton Ochsner, Dr. DeBakey was among the first to link lung cancer to smoking in a medical journal article in 1939. But most of his life's work related to the heart, blood vessels and the causes of arteriosclerosis. He volunteered for military service during World War II and was assigned to the surgeon general's office, where his work resulted in the creation of MASH units and the Veterans Affairs hospital research system. Dr. DeBakey also proposed systematic follow-up studies of veterans with certain medical problems, which eventually became the VA's medical research program. He received the Legion of Merit in 1945 for his wartime achievements".

As the My Hero website writes "It's like this with Dr. DeBakey. Seventy-five years of firsts and foremosts, achievements and awards. His list of accomplishments is so utterly titanic, his resume requires an intermission, a bit of time for the reader to stretch his legs and refuel for the second half. But if you stick with it, you'll find that taking a closer look at the father of modern open-heart surgery reveals something alive and loving and altogether miraculous: his heart".
