FDA WARNING OF ADVERSE EFFECTS IN BOTOX AND BOTULINUM TOXIN REMINDER THAT THOUGH MILLIONS HAVE HAD WRINKLE REMOVAL SUCCESSFULLY ITS A POTENT MEDICINE

FDA WARNING OF ADVERSE EFFECTS IN BOTOX AND BOTULINUM TOXIN REMINDER THAT THOUGH MILLIONS HAVE HAD WRINKLE REMOVAL SUCCESSFULLY ITS A POTENT MEDICINE

Millions of people have had Botox injections for wrinkle removal successfully. Botulinum toxin like Botox has been used for both cosmetic and non cosmetic medical procedures such as treatment of muscle spasticity but wrinkle removal is the most popular use for botulinum toxin. Side effects of wrinkle smoothing with botulinum toxin are relatively infrequent with eyelid drooping called ptosis happening sometimes. But in a reminder that botulinum toxin is a medical compound, the FDA has issued a notice of some adverse reactions linked to Botox, Botox Cosmetic (Botulinum toxin Type A) and Myobloc (Botulinum toxin Type B). According to the FDA statement "The most severe adverse effects were found in children treated for spasticity in their limbs associated with cerebral palsy. Treatment of spasticity is not an FDA-approved use of botulism toxins in children or adults".

The FDA warning is a reminder that we are dealing with a very potent medicinal molecule. It should only be administered by qualified doctors who understand Botox and how to use it.

Although there is no chance of contracting botulism from Botox injections, there are some risks associated with the procedure. There is a small risk of eyelid drooping (ptosis) and slight puffiness following treatment. The incidence of ptosis is about 5% but always ask your doctor what problems they have had with treatments as this will differ between doctors.

If too much toxin is injected, for example (which has happened in the past) it can cause problems or if it is injected into the wrong facial area. Rarely, according to the drug insert, people have had allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (life threatening allergic reaction). Aminoglycoside antibiotics and other chemicals that interfere with neuromuscular transmission can interact with Botox. Pregnant women and people with neuromuscular disorders are advised to avoid Botox.

The adverse effects in the FDA notice were found in FDA-approved and non approved usages. The most severe adverse effects were found in children treated for spasticity in their limbs associated with cerebral palsy. Treatment of spasticity is not an FDA-approved use of botulism toxins in children or adults.

IN ENGLAND BRITISH NURSING COUNCIL WARNS NURSES DONT INJECT BOTOX WITHOUT DOCTOR ASSESSMENT HOW BOTOX WRINKLE INJECTION WORKS SIDE EFFECTS

There is a concern that some nurses in England might be giving Botox treatment injections for wrinkle smoothing without a doctor. The Nursing and Midwifery Council, which regulates nurses and midwives in the United Kingdom, Britain is concerned that nurses in cosmetic surgery clinics which offer wrinkle removal injections are routinely administering Botox treatment by themselves even though the rules state that a qualified practitioner must have seen the patient first before Botox is adminstered. Under guidelines issued by the NMC, all patients wishing to have Botox injections to smooth out facial wrinkles must have been fully assessed by a doctor who knows their medical history. Botox, botulinum toxin, can cause severe allergic reactions and if too high a dosage is given to a patient it will paralyse the muscles.

Botox is injected into the muscles, reducing muscle contraction for a period of three to six months. The treatment is designed to break the habit of frowning or squinting and so reduce the appearance of the lines and also reduce the development of further facial lines. After Botox treatment it takes 2-3 days for the effects to start to be seen reaching its maximum effect at 7-10 days. The treatment can last from to 3-6 months, on average 4 months.

Injections of Botox wrinkle treatment have become the fastest growing facial cosmetic procedure in the United States and are very popular in Europe as well. Both men and women have been seeking wrinkle treatments.Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A) a nerve blocker, is applied for wrinkles on the forehead and to reduce crow's feet wrinkles near the eyes. Some wrinkles are caused by repeated contraction of muscles in the face.Very deep wrinkles tend to be less susceptible to treatment. Botox is used as as anti-aging treatment to block the nerve impulses for muscle contractions in the face. Celebrities use it and the actress Virgina Madsen has decided to talk about her experiences to help people considering treatments. Botox is also being used to shut down sweat production in the skin.

How does Botox work? What is it? Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox Cosmetic) is a chemical produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin is one of the most potent toxic substances in nature. When used in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin, small doses block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction.

I admire the actress Virgina Madsen who has discussed publicly her use of Botox."Approached by Allergan to work for its campaign called "Keep the Wisdom. Lose the Lines"..."Stressing that Botox and Juvéderm are medicines ,they are prescription medicines" Madsen said, "I think a lot of people have lost sight of that with the growing popularity of these products. I don't think anyone would ever consider having their eyes examined anywhere else but in a doctor's chair. It is very similar."

More about Botox wrinkle removal. Apparently men as well as women are concerned about wrinkles. The top cosmetic procedure performed in 2006 was Botox injection for both men and women with a total of 4.1 million procedures. Wrinkles seem to be an issue for younger people too as these reports about Botox attest.

A thirtyish woman journalist concerned about wrinkles wrote about her experience with Botox." I decided to try Botox, a toxin that temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles that cause wrinkles...It is typically used for wrinkles on your forehead, between your eyes or around the outer corners of your eyes. There is no downtime (after the Botox injection), and the reduction of wrinkles should begin in a few days and last from three to six months. The most common Botox injection side effects are temporary eyelid droop and nausea".
