BRAIN IMPROVEMENT? HORIZONTAL SACCADIC EYE MOVEMENT WORKING YOUR WORKING MEMORY HARDER

People play brain games and brain training exercises to try and improve memory. It is hard to believe but moving your eyes from side to side might help you remember things an easy brain improvement game. What was the post about anyway? Oh, I remember it was about forgetting or rather how not to forget. How do you train your brain to remember, to improve your memory? Watch this video which talks about moving your eyes sideways to help you remember facts and lists such as on a test. No really I am NOT kidding. Andrew Parker at Manchester Metropolitan University in England and Stephen Christman at Toledo University in Ohio have both published research suggesting that horizontal eye movement can improve recall. Parker's study about eye movement and remembering memory was in the April, 2007 issue of the journal Brain and Cognition.

Parker presented 102 university students with recordings of a male voice reading 20 lists of 15 words. The subjects were then handed a list of words and asked to pick out those that they had just heard. On average, the students who had moved their eyes from side to side performed 10 per cent better than the rest. Saccadic horizontal eye movement improved recall. Saccadic means rapid intermittent eye movement, such as that which occurs when the eyes fix on one point after another in the visual field. Up and down eye movement was of no use at all to recall.
