ANOTHER POSSIBLE BENEFIT OF FISH OIL OMEGA 3 FOR THE HEART THIS TIME IN HEART FAILURE
Omega 3 may yet turn out to be a "wonder drug". You already know that Omega 3, a fatty acid has been suggested for everything from the heart to the head with the strongest evidence for the heart. I thought that this new study about a benefit of fish oil for heart failure is really exciting if it proves to be true. Heart failure can have many causes such as long term high blood pressure or damage by a heart attack. Whatever the cause the common denominator is that what happens in heart failure is that the heart pump pumps less well. Thus people with it can experience fluid backup. That's one of the reasons diuretics like Lasix ,furosemide are prescribed. Scientists published a study that seemed to imply that some heart failure patients would live longer if they took omega 3 fish oil capsules. The capsules they used on the study contained 1 gram of omega 3 fatty acids.
"Across the whole group of almost 7,000 participants there was a 9 per cent reduced risk of death in those on fish oils. But when the researchers looked at 5,000 patients who followed the once-daily regime more closely, the effect was bigger and the risk of deaths was reduced by 14 per cent".
Fish oil from fatty fish like salmon and tuna contains a type of omega 3 fatty acid. Fatty acids are important chemical building blocks in the body. You should be aware that there are different kinds of omega 3. Thus, omega 3 from certain plants is different than the omega 3 from fish oil.
"The study, carried out in Italy, was presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Munich, Germany.Patients in the study took the supplements on top of their normal drugs. The supplements also helped to reduce the risk of being admitted to hospital for cardiovascular problems. When the risk of dying from heart problems or being admitted to hospital were taken together, there was an 8 per cent reduced risk for those on fish oils".
"Prof Luigi Tavazzi from the research centre of the of the Italian Association of Hospital Cardiologists based in Florence, said: "Our study shows that the long-term administration of 1g per day of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acid was effective in reducing both all-cause mortality and admissions to hospital for cardiovascular reasons".
