Common side effects from varicose vein treatment following a procedure can include bruising, swelling, skin discoloration, cramping, and itching. Swelling and skin discoloration may last for several months. Less common side effects of varicose vein treatments include blood clots or nerve damage. An uncommon side effect of sclerotherapy is liquid chemical leaking out of the vein, which could cause tissue damage or ulcers.

Because foam has a greater surface area than liquid,the foam that is injected is able to adhere to the vein walls more effectively and cause faster shrinkage of the damaged veins. In sclerotherapy, or ‘injection therapy’,a mild chemical solution is injected into the incompetent varicose vein. The sclerosing agent irritates the walls of the vessel, causing it to collapse. The body then absorbs the vein and blood is re-routed to a healthy vein, restoring proper venous circulation in the area.
