What is a lymph node anyway? Why do lymph nodes get big? There are a number of reasons lymph nodes can enlarge. When you have a throat infection,for example, the lymph nodes in the neck often mistakenly called "glands" can get enlarged because the lymphatic system is involved in fighting infection. Another possible reason for lymph node enlargement is cancer such as Hodgkins Lymphoma.
Cancer can travel along the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes are like traps in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of lymph nodes connected by "pipes" somewhat analogous to blood vessels and it is a vital part of the immune system. So the lymphatic vessels carry lymph like blood vessels carry blood. These lymph vessels "drain" into lymph nodes along the way.
