A Review says Studies suggest that Acupuncture is At Least as Effective as prophylactic drug treatment and has fewer adverse effects


I get headaches from time to time...some people say I cause headaches..but that's another story...anyway here's a question Can acupuncture prevent migraine headaches? Is acupuncture (the Chinese system of inserting needles at certain points on the body) worth a hill of beans? The answer according to the medical review called Cochrane Review is amazingly Yes! According to the Cohrane Review Available studies suggest that acupuncture is at least as effective as, or possibly more effective than, prophylactic drug treatment, and has fewer adverse effects. Acupuncture should be considered a treatment option for patients willing to undergo this treatment.

Unless you are in the medical profession it's not likely you have heard of Cohrane Reviews. What are they? "Cochrane Reviews investigate the effects of interventions for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in a healthcare setting... Cochrane Reviews in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) answer clinical questions about the effectiveness of treatments.

'Each review addresses a clearly formulated question; for example: Can antibiotics help in alleviating the symptoms of a sore throat? The research is reviewed using stringent guidelines to establish whether or not there is conclusive evidence about a specific treatment...". yada yada yada



According to CD001218..."In the previous version of this review, evidence in support of acupuncture for migraine prophylaxis was considered promising but insufficient. Now, with 12 additional trials, there is consistent evidence that acupuncture provides additional benefit to treatment of acute migraine attacks only or to routine care. There is no evidence for an effect of 'true' acupuncture over sham interventions, though this is difficult to interpret, as exact point location could be of limited importance. Available studies suggest that acupuncture is at least as effective as, or possibly more effective than, prophylactic drug treatment, and has fewer adverse effects. Acupuncture should be considered a treatment option for patients willing to undergo this treatment.

    Quantum Entangelment: What Einstein Called Spooky Action at a Distance Are Plants Using It

    How can two things across the universe communicate instantaneously even if they are a billion light years apart? Quantum Entanglement is one of those things that happens in the world of quantum physics that slaps in the face and you say that defies common sense. Even Einstein called it "spooky".. Recently an article in Scientific American said there might be evidence for quantum entanglement in plant photosynthesis.

    "Being a theoretical particle physicist and someone who does not particularly like cats (there's got to be a correlation there somewhere), I feel compelled to provide a more accurate analogy/explanation for quantum entanglement, though nowhere nearly as entertaining as the cat analogy.



    Not too long ago, a friend of mine who lives in the US asked me to explain QE in a way that was accurate but not too technical, so I'll just copy my message to him and paste it here.

    Imagine that you and I each have a coin and that these two coins were "born" together, made from the same process, before I came to Denmark. Now, imagine that I bring my coin with me and that we decide to throw our respective coins and compare results. We devise some means of synchronizing our throws so that they occur simultaneously, that is, each throw of your coin happens at the same time I throw mine.



    Now, suppose that our results are:



    (T stands for tails, H for heads)


    mine: THTTHTHTHHHHHTHT

    yours: HTHHTHTHTTTTTHTH



    When I look at my results, without knowing about yours, I see that my results are what is expected from a fair coin. In fact, I could apply all kinds of randomness tests and I'd conclude that my coin is behaving like a random fair coin should.

    When you look at your results, without knowing about mine, you reach the same conclusion about your own coin.



    Yet, when we compare our results, we see that they are strongly correlated: every time I get a T, you get an H, and vice-versa. How can that be? The processes are supposed to be *independently* random, but they're not; somehow, their randomness are strongly correlated.



    This is what's known as "quantum entanglement." Of course, it doesn't happen with coins, but if you take two electrons created by the same process (some particle reaction), for instance, and move them far away from one another, this is what happens: when you measure one electron's spin, it's either spin up or spin down, and it's a random process. Same with the other electron. However, their spin measurements are correlated just as with the coins.



    Fine, you say, there must be some interaction, some kind of force that the electrons are exerting on one another (like electromagnetism or gravity, but not either one, because we understand both and know that they aren't it), so that when you measure one's spin, the other "knows" to flip its own spin the opposite way.



    Ok, the problem is, though, that these measurements happened simultaneously, which means that whatever that interaction or force is, it's traveling faster than light, which contradicts the theory of relativity (which is one of the backbones of physics). This is known as the "EPR paradox" (EPR stands for Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen, the three physicists who came up with it).



    Quantum entanglement and the EPR paradox are still not well understood, but quantum entanglement is a real phenomenon, observed experimentally already. Whether the EPR paradox is a true paradox remains a mystery. If it is a true paradox, relativity will need to be fixed.

    This video about mathematics and nature is beautiful although I don't quite get it. The initial numbers are the so called Fibonacci numbers. According to Wikipedia "Fibonacci sequences appear in biological settings,in two consecutive Fibonacci numbers, such as branching in trees, arrangement of leaves on a stem, the fruitlets of a pineapple,the flowering of artichoke, an uncurling fern and the arrangement of a pine cone". In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers are the numbers in the following sequence:

    0,\;1,\;1,\;2,\;3,\;5,\;8,\;13,\;21,\;34,\;55,\;89,\;144,\;

    By definition, the first two Fibonacci numbers are 0 and 1, and each remaining number is the sum of the previous two. Some sources omit the initial 0, instead beginning the sequence with two 1s. I heard about this video on the blog Suture for A Living.

    All Scrubbed Up Retiring...

    Unfortunately due to other commitments and just generally getting older, SA Doc and myself have to announce that All Scrubbed is retiring. It's been one helluva ride - and thank you to everyone for being part of it. Every comment was highly appreciated and kept us going through the last 2 years.


    We'll obviously keep it alive so you can trawl through the archives. There are some doozies!

    The world has become a much smaller place, thanks to technology and globalization. But no matter how connected we are, there still exist huge disparities between the rich and the poor. The gap gets wider with each passing year, for individuals and nations. In the eyes of the developed world, third world countries are perceived as places where the standard of living is poor and where the things they take for granted are considered luxuries. In reality however, third world countries have their share of both the obscenely rich and the dirt poor. And the main reason for their backwardness is not just the paucity of money, but also the lack of awareness and education among the poorer and downtrodden sections of society.

    When we consider the state of medical services in these countries, we see that the rich are able to afford any kind of treatment for all kinds of diseases. But for the poor and the middle class, medication is prohibitively expensive simply because quality medical services are only offered by the private sector. The government does offer services for the poor and those who are not able to afford private medical treatment, but the quality of treatment is poor at times. Also, the facilities are often overcrowded and not hygienic, and this makes the middle class hesitant to seek medical treatment at these places.

    Improving medical services in third world countries is an uphill climb, but it can be done if:


    • Tax money is put to better use – to build cleaner and more spacious medical facilities and to pay qualified doctors and other healthcare personnel so that they don’t move away to set up their own private practice or join a private care provider.
    • Politicians don’t get greedy and swindle public funds that are meant for the improvement of society and the common man.
    • Bribery is abolished and doctors and healthcare personnel are encouraged to offer better services through various incentives.
    • People are made more aware of the need for cleanliness and personal hygiene.
    • Education is made compulsory for children so that they have opportunities to leave behind the squalor and poverty they grew up in.
    • Smaller towns and villages are better linked by road to cities and larger towns where there are better medical facilities.
    • Mobile medical services are introduced in remote villages so that diseases are diagnosed in the early stages and the need for emergency care and hospitalization is minimized.
    • More emphasis is placed on preventive rather than curative care. When this happens and people are more aware of the need for preventive care through the right diet and regular exercise, healthcare begins to look up in any nation, developed or developing.

    Acromegaly Can Cause Certain Parts of the Body to Grow Even in Adults



    I don't know where Dr. Watson went to medical school but in the movie Pearl of Death, he fails to recognize that the so called Hoxton Creeper is actually a man with an obvious case of Acromegaly. In fact he was the actor Rondo Hatton, a sportswriter who developed a case of acromegaly.









    Acromegaly happens with the release of too much growth hormone after the bones of the body have closed and thus only certain areas can still become enlarged.
    Usually it's because of a pituitary gland problem... According to Wikipedia "Acromegaly distorted the shape of Hatton's head, face, and extremities in a gradual but consistent process. Hatton, who reportedly had been voted the handsomest boy in his class at Hillsborough High School, eventually became severely disfigured by the disease. Because the symptoms developed in adulthood (as is common with the disorder), the disfigurement was incorrectly attributed later by film studio publicity departments to his exposure to a German mustard gas attack during service in World War I. It sounded like sports equipment on the "holodeck"...(Captain Picard)....I looked into it and there actually is such a device and it WAS developed by NASA! But it turns out to be useful for runners and others on earth to reduce the impact on joints.

They zip themselves in and an increase in air pressure lifts them so they can run at a fraction of their actual weight (pressing the up/down arrows on the control panel decreases body weight at increments of 1 percent, as much as 80 percent)".
